Wovenware helps Quantum Aviation modernize legacy baggage handling solution with a web-based system that enables greater worker mobility and improved customer service.
“Quantum Aviation needed to modernize its legacy system to a web-based system to enable greater integration with other systems and apps, while also improving mobility to give baggage handlers access from iPads and other mobile devices, in order to quickly and accurately load and unload bags often under bad weather conditions or route changes.”
Modernizing Solutions Together
Atlanta-based Quantum Aviation Solutions, a provider of baggage handling systems for the airline industry, recognizes the challenges of ensuring smooth operations in such a complex environment. The company turned to Wovenware for help when it recognized it needed to modernize its existing Java-based legacy solution to a web-based app to enable greater mobility of workers, as well as to enable continuous integration with various systems across operations and ensure continuous improvement.
Boosting the employee experience to enable a better customer experience
The first step for Wovenware was designing a web-based app that would give Quantum Aviation the flexibility, scalability and compatibility it needed. In order to fully understand the needs and challenges of baggage handlers, we spent a week with them to experience it first-hand.
The challenges and insights
Modernize a legacy system to enable better integration with other systems
Enable access from iPads and other mobile devices
Improve the baggage handler experience - often under tough weather conditions
Share and leverage data across functions - from ticketing and customer service to external partners
The Wovenware Approach
In order to fully understand the needs and challenges of baggage handlers, we spent a week with them to experience it first-hand. When we noticed that they typically wear gloves, we knew operating a mouse would be out of the question and a web-based app with keyboard shortcuts was needed. Also, since the baggage handlers need to quickly access info on their devices, we custom-designed a responsive web app that had a clean user interface with big, easy-to-read buttons.
We also developed an app that manages re-flighting, ensuring that the bags get on the right flight when people miss their flights, and integrated the airline’s key apps so different areas of operations – from ticketing to customer service and lost bags to human resources – can communicate and share data in real time.
Technologies we take advantage of
Building
it Right
Wovenware implemented agile development methodologies to design and build a SaaS-based mobile application for baggage handlers.
A robust backend hosted in Azure Cloud Services built using REST APIs and domain- driven design. The mobile application supports both iOS and Android platforms.
Agile development and automated testing allowed for rolling out new functionality on a regular basis and continuously incorporate feedback.
❝We wanted to take a more strategic approach to operations and speed update cycles. Through our work with Wovenware, we’re able to provide greater efficiencies and we’re much better positioned to do business in today's environment.❞

Project Results
The move from a terminal-based approach to a SaaS, web-based architecture has been well received among existing customers and it has helped land new airline customers. It also allows Quantum Aviation to manage multiple sites and services with a smaller team and monitor mobile devices and fix problems remotely.
It also allows Quantum Aviation to track and trace bags from check-in to final delivery, regardless of route changes, reduce the time it takes for reflighting of bags and reduce lost baggage costs.
