The Metaverse is a massively scaled and interactive virtual platform. Its purpose is to provide a place where people can socialize, play, shop and more using nonfungible(NFTs) and other forms of cryptocurrency. A platform that consists of interconnected virtual reality worlds where people can interact with each other as they do in the physical world, what are its future plans? I discuss precisely this in the article The Metaverse: Driven by AI, Along with the Old Fashioned Kind of Intelligence published in Forbes.

A Big Step for the Internet

The metaverse is set to level up the playing field of the internet– from the public sector to private businesses, it will change how they operate. Driven by the consumer, same as with previous tech inventions like the cell phone, the metaverse will seek to create a similar digital experience at work that resembles the experience in our homes. Here are some examples to consider:

  • Next Frontier of eCommerce. The metaverse opens up plenty of opportunities for better sales and user experience by providing vast amounts of consumer data. Going into a virtual marketplace, where you can purchase goods by using cryptocurrency, would be possible in the metaverse.
  • A new level of virtual conferences. Covid-19 paved the way for virtual conferences, but these still lack the benefits of in-person conferences. The metaverse could soon offer richer, immersive experiences and could become the norm for virtual meetings, through the use of avatars.
  • Design-driven manufacturing. The metaverse is bringing attention to “digital twins”. Manufacturers will be able to design products and offer their digital versions in the metaverse. This could provide better-informed feedback based on how people react to the digital version of their products. This could improve brand awareness.

AI: The Main Character

Technology plays an important role in making this immersive experience what it is. It is expected that virtual reality and blockchain technology will advance in order to complete the metaverse experience.

Meta announce an AI supercomputer in January. This will rival the supercomputers available and other technology should follow suit. For example, new wearable technology–headsets, smart glasses– will need to be updated to provide a seamless and richer experience. Enter AI.

Artificial intelligence will power the metaverse. It will be responsible for its scalability and automation more than any other technology. Deep-learning software and chatbots will be the force behind every activity. AI will be called upon to understand vast amounts of training data and modeling to be able to understand words, images, videos and text. AI will even create 3D images, animation, speech and artwork for the metaverse.

The importance of using AI will be ensuring that bias doesn’t creep into the algorithms, something that we are already managing with AI today. The metaverse poses a problem for AI. Guaranteeing unbiased AI could be an issue without rules of play or law of land and the metaverse’s promise to be a decentralized, non-authoritarian society.

While plenty of opportunities to thrive will flow, businesses will need to proceed with caution. The challenge will be ensuring a balance between rules of conduct and the promise of a free rein metaverse.  Remember, any software program still needs real people to succeed.
