For anyone, starting his professional career it’s always an exciting, yet challenging time. When I started the job search I only had one thing clear and it was that I wanted to stay in Puerto Rico. With that in mind, I started my search six months before finishing my studies at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. At that time, a friend told me about Wovenware and that’s how it all began.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when I landed the job at Wovenware. My previous tech experience included work with a start-up firm, but the environment was very different from a services firm like Wovenware. When I arrived at Wovenware and began to know and understand the software engineering services environment, I was very surprised with the different business model. The first thing that caught my attention was the work environment – based on six fundamental values: passion, professionalism, discipline, openness, fun, and delivery & quality. These values are evident in the projects and work teams I see daily.

At first, I was assigned to a project which included only one developer, who in turn was assigned to be my technical mentor. When I was halfway through my training, my project manager assigned me for two weeks to another project. Those two weeks proved to be very useful. I was able to quickly understand what the business problem was that we were hoping to solve since I already had some experience in the related technology. This experience gave me a clear understanding of the role of a software engineering services business.

The two weeks passed, and I returned to my original project, which was a very challenging one for me because it was divided into several sub-projects that were developed in more than five different programming languages. But thanks to the help of my mentor and the way the project was organized, I was able to understand it in a reasonable time. After a few days I was able to complete my tasks successfully and the client’s satisfaction was expressed to me on several occasions. When the project was completed in July, I was assigned to another very interesting project, a standalone web application for managing and using deep learning models, which I’m currently working on.

One of the things that has helped me grow professionally in this company is the constant feedback and encouragement I receive. Wovenware conducts monthly evaluations of new employees, yet they are informal and help us stay on track prior to six-month performance reviews. In my case I realized that I should work on time estimates and improve my testing skills during the development projects. This understanding is helping me grow professionally and expand my capabilities. The feedback has also motivated me to complete a certification in the JAVA programming language to improve my skills as a developer.

And it’s not just all software programming at Wovenware, in the short time I have been with the company I have participated in several activities outside the office that have been so rewarding and fun. The first was to participate as a recruiter in the Job Fair at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. Another one was the “Outing” that was a whole day outside the office full of activities to help us grow as a team. Finally, there are the “Fun Runs.” Every Wednesday after work we go running or walking for an hour and get a little exercise to get rid of the workday stress and recharge.

Working at Wovenware has been the best way I could launch my professional career in software programming. The depth of talented engineers and data scientists and the commitment the company has to its clients and employees is teaching me more than I could imagine.
